Ute Peak

The Ute Mountains (Wisuv Káruv (Ute), Dził Naajiní (Navajo)) are an isolated range in SW Colorado. The Ute mountains jut up from the surrounding land. Because of this, Ute Peak one of the 10 most prominent peaks in Colorado, despite a much lower elevation than other peaks on the list. A Ute legend describes the mountains as the sleeping form of a Great Warrior God who was also known as a chief who fell asleep while recovering from wounds received in a great battle with 'the Evil Ones'. The mountain is also one the sacred Navajo mountains (Dzil), serving as boundary markers for the Navajo people.
